John Thomas Mantle - Biography

John Mantle was a multi-talented athlete and sportsman. He attended Bedwelty Grammar School where he became a Wales youth soccer international, Monmouthshire triple jump champion and schools cricket captain. He was, of course, a rugby player to boot! John attended Loughborough College where he played Rugby Union and turned out for the college in the Middlesex sevens. He continued his development as an all round athlete becoming the college shot putt champion.

He joined Newport Rugby Union Club, the 'Black and Ambers', after completing studies at Loughborough College. During his relatively short stay at this prestigious club John played 27 games from 1962/3 to 1964/5 scoring 8 tries mostly as a number eight.

Newport RU Record

1962/3 : 2 matches

1963/4 : 7 matches scoring one try

1964/5 : 18 matches scoring seven tries

Despite this brief club record John Mantle managed to win two Welsh caps in 1964 against England and South Africa. His final cap was on the tour to South Africa with Wales. Mantle was being groomed to be the cornerstone of the welsh pack when he was "lured to the North".

Mike Dams (The Sorcerer - Newport RU Historian) recalls:

I remember playing against John Mantle at schoolboy level. Although he made his name at Union as a back row forward he played that day at centre. He was big and the over-aged 19yr old and scored at least one try against us! I tried to tackle him once and was brushed aside like a feather. St Helens's gain - Newport and Wales' loss!!
